MUSICAL CHAIRS
How long until we can have our dance floor back?
The space that DJ's are hired to fill has, at least for now, been cited as out of bounds.
What can we expect when the doors are re-open and clubbers welcomed back to party in close proximity with people they don't know? The risks are high.
There is an appeal factor in nightclubs, sharing a space with people that you often don't know, but who you feel connected to, like part of the family. A sense of belonging.
Without a dance floor one of those elements is missing. For a DJ especially, the dance floor is so important. You notice people, groups and sections, how they are reacting to songs, how they're moving around.
This is what I need. I need to see people dancing so I know what to play next. Without this connection, it is going to be different.
I can see clubs and owners dividing up that space, filling it with tables as a compromise so that it can be "full". But these tables won't be like ones in Ibiza or Vegas booked but never used. These tables will be your allocated space. Where you are served drinks and you might even be allowed to dance as long as it's within the permitted social distance in space. Will there be an allocated time you can have the table for? Similar to a restaurant. Will the DJ's set match these time slots? Who knows!
Limitations on socialising in groups are surely to be in place for a while, whether you are dancing or sat around a table. Let's get used to face masks and hand sanitizer and perhaps chairs right in front of the booth.
But as club culture has shown previously, it will adapt, clubbers will adapt and DJ's will adapt too.
